The Alfred Dunhill Championship Returns to its Historic Roots in Johannesburg – A Major Win for South African Golf Tourism

Golf tourism in South Africa is set to receive a significant boost with the exciting return of the Alfred Dunhill Championship to Johannesburg in 2025. From 11–14 December, this globally recognized tournament will be hosted at the prestigious Royal Johannesburg Golf Club, where it was originally played from 2000 to 2004.
In a strategic move by the Sunshine Tour and tournament organizers, the championship will temporarily move from its traditional home at Leopard Creek—a course currently undergoing a well-deserved period of recovery following its intensive summer schedule, which included hosting both the Alfred Dunhill Championship and the esteemed R&A Africa Amateur Championship.
“We’re delighted to be bringing the Alfred Dunhill Championship back to Johannesburg,” said Thomas Abt, Commissioner of the Sunshine Tour. “Royal Johannesburg’s East Championship Course is internationally respected as one of Africa’s finest and offers the perfect stage for this year’s event.”
This relocation is not just a nostalgic return to the tournament’s origins—it’s also a celebration of South Africa’s world-class golf destinations. The event will shine an international spotlight on Johannesburg, inviting local and international golf fans to experience the vibrancy of the city, the hospitality of its people, and the exceptional golf offerings of the region.

As Golf Tourism South Africa, we applaud this decision and see it as a golden opportunity to highlight the diversity of golf experiences across the country—from bushveld brilliance to urban prestige. With a calendar that includes some of the most elite global and amateur tournaments, South Africa continues to rise as a premier golf destination on the world stage.
Let the countdown to a championship of champions begin—right here in Jozi.
